Breeding Gargoyle geckos

So you are interested in breeding gargoyle geckos, but you’re not sure how to breed gargoyle geckos?  Well, we are here to change that!  Above all, at CB reptile, we breed all of our geckos for sale in-house here at our facility.  Secondly, we proudly work with over 6 species of gecko, and within these 6 species are thousands of gecko color morphs, or in this instance, gargoyle gecko color morphs for sale.

How to breed Gargoyle Geckos – Getting started

Before you get started the first thing to consider is what type, color or “gargoyle gecko morphs” you are looking to produce.  Also, you want to consider the initial expense for high-end colorful morphs as they’re offspring will be worth considerably more money.  In comparison to if you were working with more common or less colorful breed stock.

Also noteworthy, the cheapest you are going to find would be the most common reticulated gargoyle gecko as well as striped gargoyle geckos that do not contain much or any color.

Above those in price would be lightly colored striped gargoyle geckos as well as lightly blotched.  Also consider they are getting more expensive with color. In regards to color, next step up would be more colorful stripes and blotched gargoyle that have good color.  If in that range, you can spend anywhere from 400 all the way up to 3000.00.  Basically, the price often depends on the amount of color if the gargoyle gecko is a super stripe, or super blotch etc.

How to breed Gargoyle Geckos – Setting up your breeding enclosure

One of the nicest things about gargoyle gecko care is they do not require insects.  Most breeders still supplement with insects but using a high end powdered gecko food.   Also, the main powdered gecko diets are Pangea or Repashe.  It is our opinion that either works just as well as is easy to prepare and clean.

Never house more than 1 male gargoyle gecko per breeding setup

Male gargoyle geckos can fight to the death, so it is imperative you only house one adult male gargoyle in with your female gargoyle geckos.  If you are using something that is at least 15x36x18″ you could house 1 male and up to 3 female gargoyle geckos.

Gargoyle gecko breeding habitat setup: No heat or light required!

Most importantly, there is no heat or heat mat, or heat lamp required for gargoyle geckos.  Secondly, also do not require UV light, so besides viewing purposes, lights are not required.  Lastly, the easiest thing to do is keep gargoyle geckos at room temperature and most of the time you are either using aTupperwaree style container, or clear pastic sweater box.

Preparing your gargoyle gecko habitat for breeding

Provide your gargoyle plenty of areas to hide.  Gargoyles are not climbers per say, so a horizontal terrarium works better than a vertical setup.  Provide plenty of branches and spaces to hide.  Also be sure to provide a humid hide, whihc also will serve as a nesting box, or lay box.  We recommend a standard 8×10″ tubberware that is 3-4″ deep filled with damp coco fiber.  This box will be used as a “handout”, a humid area to help with proper shedding, and most importantly, a space with proper humidity and temperatures for your adult female gargoyle gecko to deposit her eggs.

Incubating gargoyle gecko eggs

Gargoyle gecko hatchlings are not able to be temperature sex incubated, meaning you cannot manipulate whether the babies are male or female simply by the temperature in which you incubate gargoyle gecko eggs, like leopard gecko eggs for example.

We prefer an incubator that has limited airflow.  Keeping your gargoyle gecko eggs around 75 degrees will leave you with hatchlings in 90-100 days that are healthy, and evenly sexed (50/50 male / female ratio).

Gargoyle gecko egg incubation substrate or egg incubation media

Once your gargoyle gecko females have laid or deposited their eggs into the gargoyle gecko lay box, you can gently remove the eggs.  Once removed you can take care NOT to rotate them, so as to not detach the embryo from the inside wall of the egg.  There are 2 types of incubating commonly used today.  The older and more common method is to push 1/3 of the egg into a damp media, like hatchrite, damp vermiculite, or coco coir also known as coconut fiber.  The other newer method, which is still newer and “less popular” is the suspended incubation method.

Suspended Incubation means using some type of egg tray, or egg shelf that sits above some type of moisture media, like hatchritch, coco coir or fiber, or even water crystals.
