Panther Chameleons are diurnal, basking lizards, meaning that they are out during the day and prefer basking in sunlight. Because of this, they will require basking lights and UVB lights during the day in order to thrive. During the day, Panther Chameleons prefer to bask at temperatures between 92 and 97-degrees.
Female Panther Chameleons have a dull brown colouration with hints of pink, peach, or bright orange patterning throughout their body. Male panther chameleon for sale on the other hand have much brighter colors and patterns these vary depending on their geographical location known as “locales”. Panther chameleons from the areas of Nosy Be panther chameleon, Ankify, and Ambanja panther chameleons are normally a vibrant blue, while those from Antsiranana and Sambava are red, green or orange. The areas of Maroantsetra and Tamatave produce primarily red Chameleons, however this only applies to the males, female stay the same color whatever location they are in.
Chameleons can quickly change their appearance in response to temperature, environment, and mood. Scientists recently identified a key factor in their ability to do this: The lizards can “tune” the distances between nanoscale crystals in their skin that reflect light, creating a spectrum of colors

Skin Formed by Layers of Cells
STRUCTURE
CELLS
CRYSTALS
The cells that form its skin play a significant roll in the color changes. This zoom represents 150 microns of a chameleon skin, about twice the diameter of a human hair.
How Skin Changes Color
SUBMISSIVE
NEUTRAL
EXCITED
When the light hits its skin, the cells act depending on the mood of the chameleon. Crystals would be close together in a neutral state and spread out when the chameleon gets excited. These crystals would reflect out to the epidermis the warm light, changing the chameleons color to yellow.
Panther Chameleon studies
Scientists have long thought that chameleons change color when skin cell pigments spread out along veinlike cell extensions. Beneath a layer of pigmentary skin cells, they found another layer of skin cells containing nanoscale crystals arranged in a triangular lattice. By exposing samples of chameleon skin to pressure and chemicals, the researchers discovered that these crystals can be “tuned” to alter the spacing between them. That, in turn, affects the color of light that the lattice of crystals reflects.
As the distance between the crystals increases, the reflected colors shift from blue to green to yellow to orange to red—a kaleidoscopic display that’s common among some panther chameleons as they progress from relaxed to agitated or amorous.

While male Panther Chameleons are extremely territorial and live a solitary life, it is not uncommon for males to get aggressive with one another if their communication by colors does not work. Females are a little bit more tolerant towards one another but still prefer living on their own. You can keep multiple females together if they are raised together. As far as male and female go, the only time they would come together would be during the breeding season.
One of the many myths surrounding Nosy Be Panther Chameleon is their ability to change color depending on the ground they are standing on or next to. This is not true they in fact change color depending on temperature, exposure to light and the mood they are in. For example, Nosy Be Panther Chameleons may go dark when cold to attract the heat so they can warm up more efficiently or display a variety of coloration and patterns to communicate messages to others. Bright colors may be used by a male to attract attention of a passing female, whereas dark colors could be used to show signs of stress or a warning to others. If you keep a male and female together, they may breed. You need to consider whether you want this to happen. What will you do with the babies if you incubate the eggs?
A gravid female should have access to a nesting box to lay her eggs. The box should be large enough that she can fully turn-around inside it. We use a soil mix in there that is wet enough to clump but no more. We have found that Spider Life substrate is ideal.
The eggs should be incubated in an incubator at 84oF. We incubate our eggs in sealed boxes on a moisture rich substrate (such as Hatchrite) to trap the humidty around the eggs. After approximately 7-8 months the eggs will start to hatch, the first babies to emerge will encourage the rest of the eggs to hatch.
It is a common misconception that panther chameleons of any kind can change color to match any color of their environments. All chameleons have a natural color range with which they are born, and is dictated by their species. It is affected by temperature, mood, and light. If, for example, the color purple is not within the range of colors to which their particular species can change, then they will never turn purple. Panther chameleons are at the top of the list when it comes to care requirements but are fairly easy to care for once the setup is completed properly.

Something like a tupper-ware container with a tight lid will work the best for incubating the eggs. It does not need to be a very deep one, so the kind that are used to store sandwiches are generally the best. The incubating medium can be something like vermiculite, perlite, or Super-hatch or we use Hatchrite, etc. but it all needs to be moistened to the point where you can only squeeze a single drop or two from a fist of it. This will keep the humidity high in the container. A pin hole can be made in the container for air exchange but you can also simply open it once every few weeks for a moment. You may have to re-mist the media to maintain the humidity very high (but do not spray the eggs directly).
Once the eggs are set-up correctly, indented into the incubating medium, the container does not need to be placed in an incubator, like you would with snake or bearded dragon eggs. Experienced breeders say that they found that clutches incubated at cooler temperatures (mid-70’s F) produced stronger and more robust babies than clutches incubated at 80-85 F. So in most cases the eggs could be kept in a closet or cabinet where the temperature remains at about room temperature very constantly. Mine were kept in my reptile room, which does fluctuate in temperature from day to night, so mine were not subject to extremely constant temperatures. Whether this makes a difference, I have yet to determine, but some breeders seem to suggest that a fluctuation is natural and healthy. We keep our eggs at 74 degrees and our hatching takes just about 6.5-7 months.

A panther chameleon’s diet consists mainly of insect livefood. We have found that brown crickets are the most readily acccepted by younger chameleons, but you can also use black crickets, dubia cockroaches or locusts (hoppers). On occasion, for variation you can offer other bugs such as mealworms, waxworms or calciworms.
Adult chameleons tend to have a preference for locusts above other live foods.
The vivarium should be misted with a chameleon misting system water daily to provide hydration and humidity. Humidity should be kept over 50%, but it can fluctuate throughout the day. Humidity can be easily measured by using a hygrometer.
Water for your panther chameleon is key
Most chameleons can also be trained to drink from a dripper system inside their vivarium. We here at CB reptile use the Mist King chameleon misting system. The mist king is one of the best reptile misting systems for sale in the world. Mist king pro allows you to water your pet chameleons for sale up to 9 times per day. Using a digital timer, the Mist king is the best chameleon misting system hands down, and we swear by it!

Habitat / Housing: a well ventilated, arboreal wooden vivarium
Panther Chameleon Heating: basking temperature of 90oF with ambient air temperature of 80oF
Panther Chameleon UVB Lighting: 5%-6% UVB tube
Panther Chameleon Diet: insectivorous diet of crickets, locusts and insect larvae
Habitat Decoration: jungle environment and decor to enable climbing activity
Panther chameleons live in the rainforests of Madagascar. Animals that actively bask in hot climates naturally receive a high dose of UVB from the sun. A 5%-6% jungle strength fluorescent UVB tube should be used inside the vivarium with a reflector so no UVB is wasted. There are 2 different types of fluorescent tube, T8 and T5. T5 tubes are the new technology providing double the range (24”) and lasting twice as long (12 months) so if possible we would recommend the upgrade.
Chameleons require UVB in order to synthesise vitamin D3 inside their skin. The vitamin D3 helps the chameleon to absorb calcium which crucial for bone structure and growth. Without the UVB the chameleon may not be able to use the calcium in it’s diet.
It is recommended that T8 bulbs are replaced every 6 months and T5 bulbs every 12 months which are much stronger and a better light overall.
