Southern Painted Turtle for sale Availability
Painted turtles breed readily in captivity, and are frequently produced by hobbyists and turtle farms alike. As with most temperate species, their breeding season is restricted to spring and summer. Therefore, captive-bred babies are most commonly available from May through September. However, given the significant numbers of babies hatched yearly, they are typically available for most of the year with affordable prices. Painted turtles make up a large amount of the most popular water turtles for sale in the USA.
Southern painted turtle care
Southern painted turtles are fairly easy to care for, so long as you are able to provide the proper painted turtle habitat. Using the correct painted turtle aquarium set up makes care easy. Remember, painted turtles are beautiful animals that can be fun to watch for hours on end, and are also long-lived.
Painted turtle lifespan
In captivity, painted turtles can live anywhere from 20-50 years. Painted turtle hatchlings for sale are long-lived, easy to care for water turtles for sale. Like all real turtles for sale, painted turtles ship overnight via ups in a heated or cooled insulated shipping container.
Painted turtle size
Males are smaller than females but painted turtles, in general, reach mature sizes of 8-10″. Southern painted turtles are the smallest of the species usually only hitting 6-7″. Baby painted turtles for sale may be small and cute, but they are full grown in only 4-5 years of age. Size also can be determined by the size of the painted turtle habitat. Lastly, a larger water turtle habitat will allow them to grow larger and more rapidly. Before buying any turtles for sale, it is a good idea to prepare for their adult size.
Painted turtle habitat
Habitat set up can be as easy as a large aquarium being sure that there is plenty of swimming space. Also, always provide a nice dry dock. Using a 55-gallon aquarium will allow 2 painted turtles to have ample swimming space. Place your dry dock directly under the hot spot, so your turtle can thermoregulate properly.
Painted turtle Substrate
Aquarium substrates commonly used for painted turtle setups include gravel, stones, and even sand or mud. Using colorful gravel is nice, however, it is also dangerous. We recommend larger stone-based substrates. Larger stone-based substrates will be too large for the baby painted turtle to accidentally ingest. Baby turtles for sale are like baby humans, you have to keep an eye on them!
Painted turtle UVB Lighting
Providing proper UVB is very important when raising any type of turtles. UVB is important for both vitamin D3 production and absorption, but also important for calcium intake. Providing UVB by way of T5 HO tube style lighting is best. Try to stay away from coil type Turtle UVB lamps, as they are not reliable. When your turtle is at dry dock basking he or she should also be “soaking in the rays” necessary for a strong shell and bone structure.
Southern Painted Turtles for sale – Food & Diet
Painted turtles do well on commercial pellet diets when fed properly. Using something like reptomin for baby turtles to start is great. We here at CB use reptomin turtle pellets for all of our baby turtles for sale. Once they are a bit larger, we provide them with a turtle floating stick type pellet base as they’re main staple diet. Feeding your painted turtle in moderation is key. Overfeeding will lead to a lazy, obese turtle, but also diminish water quality quickly. When water quality dips below optimal levels for extended periods of time, your real live turtles for sale are at risk.
Southern painted turtles for sale – water
Using tap water to fill your aquarium is fine, but you need to consider the source. Treatment may be necessary based on if you have “city water” or “well water”. Often city water is coming from treatment plants that clean the water by adding some chemicals like chlorine at low levels. While these levels may not be harmful to humans, letting your city water city 2-3 days will allow the chlorine time to dissipate for softer water quality for your new baby turtle for sale. We offer water conditioner in our aquatic turtle supplies section.
Painted turtle for sale Temperature
Basking temperatures should hover in the 88 to 92-degree range and typically are at the hottest spot of the dry dock area. Using a dry dock under the “hot spot” works great and simulates the baby painted turtles basking on a log so to speak. Water temperatures should be in the 74-78 degree range. Remember, proper painted turtle water temperatures and basking spots are key to success with any painted turtle habitat.
